Wood Packaging

 Ordinance No 1460/2009 of 31  December was published, which updates and clarifies the national provisions concerning the treatment of wood and wood packaging material and requirements related to their movement. Among the changes and clarifications made in national legislation in force since 01 January 2010, the most important are:

- Compulsory that all new material from coniferous wood packaging manufactured in mainland Portugal to be treated and marked before it is marketed, regardless of their destination

- Any packing material coniferous wood that comes from other Member States or from the  Azores and Madeira and that is not treated and marked as specified in the standard ISPM No. 15, can only leave the mainland if previously treated and marked

- is not required treatment and marking of boxes containing, in all its parts, wood thickness not exceeding 6 mm;

- Introduction of the possibility of companies that manufacture boxes for wine are allowed to mark their own boxes provided certain conditions are met to ensure the traceability of wood in their manufacture. In short, it is prohibited to ship to third countries for the Community and the  Azores and Madeira, packing material that has not been appropriately treated and marked.
